01 — Scheduling
Scheduling matches
How do I find a match?
Sign in to the portal and open the Upcoming Matches tab. You'll see every open match in your city — filter by day or time, then join the one you want. If nothing fits, propose one of your own with the date, time, and location that works for you.
How many players are in a match?
Exactly four. When a fourth player joins, the match locks and all four players get a confirmation email.
Can I cancel after I join?
Before the match locks (i.e. before the fourth player joins), yes — cancel from the match detail page and the seat opens back up. After the lock, please only cancel for actual emergencies. The other three players need a fourth, and a last-minute cancel often kills the match.
How many matches a season can I play?
As many as you can fit. Some players play once a week, some play three times. The leaderboards reward both extremes — consistency on the Average board, peak weeks on the Cumulative board.
02 — Scoring
Scores and leaderboards
Who enters the scores?
Any of the four players at the match can submit them through the portal after the match ends. The form follows standard NMJL scoring math — hand value, doubles, and the usual adjustments.
How do the two leaderboards work?
Two boards run in parallel. The By Score (Cumulative) board sums your top two match scores each calendar week — it rewards big weeks. The By Average board is the season average across all your matches — it rewards consistency.
Why do I see a count instead of a rank on the Average board?
You need at least six matches to qualify for the Average leaderboard. Below that, your row shows your match count (like "4 of 6") instead of a number. The Cumulative board has no minimum — every registered player qualifies.
What if a score is wrong?
Reach out to Amy. Score edits are organizer-only in v1 — there's no player-side edit or dispute UI in the portal. She can fix it from the admin side and the leaderboards update automatically.
03 — Skill levels
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Which level should I pick?
The honest one. Full descriptions of each tier are on the Skill levels page — pick the one that fits you now. You can change it any time from your profile.
Will my level restrict which matches I can join?
No. The levels are signals, not gates. Any registered player can join any match. The badge exists so people can find the kind of game they want — a Beginner can sit at a Focused table with three Advanced players if everyone's up for it.
Can I change my level mid-season?
Yes. Open your profile and adjust. The new level shows on every match you propose or join going forward; the badge on past matches stays as it was at the time, since those are historical records.
04 — The card
NMJL and card-year transitions
Which card does the league use?
The current National Mah Jongg League card, always. The league publishes a new card every spring; when it does, the Scramble has a configured cutoff date — matches before that date use the old card, matches after use the new one.
What if a season straddles the cutoff?
When you propose a match, the form asks which card year applies. After the season's cutoff date, you can only pick the new card; before, you can pick either. It's the proposer's call — usually the table agrees in advance.
Are blanks in play?
No blanks — standard NMJL rules, no tournament variants. Charleston, swap (if agreed), all the usual.
05 — Portal and tech
Using the portal
Is there an app I need to download?
No app store. The portal is a web app that works in any modern browser, and it installs to your home screen on iOS and Android if you'd like a one-tap icon. On iOS Safari, tap the share icon and choose Add to Home Screen. On Android Chrome, the browser will prompt you after a couple of visits.
What emails will I get?
Two automatically: a confirmation when a match you're in locks, and a notification when scores are entered for a match you played. Other email categories are off by default and toggleable in your profile.
How do I see other players in the league?
The Members tab shows the directory for the current season — first name, last name, username, and contact. Past-season rosters are available via the season filter. The directory is only visible to other registered players, never publicly.
I can't sign in.
Try the password reset on the sign-in page first. If that doesn't help, use the contact form and Amy will help.
